
The Office of Technology Management (OTM) at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) assists WashU faculty in the transfer of technology from the lab to the global marketplace to create a pipeline of opportunities to benefit society. They are hiring a Technical Marketing Associate / Manager to join their team.
Located in St. Louis, Missouri’s Cortex Innovation District, OTM manages a wide variety of intellectual properties arising from research programs and acts as a resource for faculty in the areas of patent prosecution, material transfer agreements, market feedback and licensing. OTM is in a growth phase, adding positions to its licensing team and creating a New Ventures group to better support inventors. OTM received over 250 disclosures last year, filed over 500 patent applications, and closed almost 140 deals. With new support from the university, OTM is building out programs to strategically build value in its technologies and the university continues to provide funds for de-risking technologies, including increasing money available for translating research. The Office of Technology Management (OTM) at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) is hiring a Technical Marketing Associate / Manager. The role is responsible for developing and executing the strategies associated with the marketing of the institution’s intellectual property (IP), as well as engaging industry partners in potential licensing opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research potential IP marketing strategies by engaging with individuals at other academic institutions and industry.
- Identify and implement the resources needed to build-out a comprehensive program for Washington University IP marketing.
- Determine the best methods for management of contacts and interactions with contacts within OTM’s operational database, and institute procedures and best-practices for OTM’s coordination of such information, including the ability to report metrics and respond to external inquiries.
- Oversee and coordinate a team of technical writers and individuals researching appropriate and market-campaign specific industry contacts and contact information.
- Prepare one-page marketing sheets for market campaign purposes, identify contacts, and run marketing campaigns on new university IP. This may be done by the Technical Marketing Associate/Manager or by oversight of technical writers and contact generators. Ensure that marketing sheets meet the requisite level of quality.
- The Technical Marketing Associate/Manager will be responsible for identifying and tracking metrics associated with the department’s marketing efforts.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master or Doctorate in the life/biological sciences, medicine, biomedical engineering, engineering, or physical sciences.
- Three years of experience in a university technology transfer office or in commercial development within the private sector.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Business experience in private industry or a Master of Business Administration degree would be a plus.
- Five years working experience in a university technology transfer office or in commercial development within the private sector.
- Must be able to assess the potential for a nascent technology in the commercial arena.
- Excellent communication skills and be able to prioritize and manage a portfolio of technology cases.
- Ability to make appropriate decisions as it relates to technology transfer activities.
- Exceptional and demonstrated ability to provide superior customer service to internal and external clients.
